We took a hike to the ruins of Charleston, AZ. Charleston was a silver mining town like Tombstone, about eight miles from Tombstone. This is the town where Johnny Behind the Duce killed a mining engineer, and supposedly Wyatt Earp stood off a lynch mob when Johnny was in Tombstone waiting for trial.
There were a number of petroglyphs on the rocks. It’s amazing they haven’t been defaced by the 1800’s miners, or today’s thugs.

We went on another hike…Yes, we’re becoming hiking fools. This time it was to the Chiricahua Mountains, a National Park about an hour from where we’re staying. The locals just call it the Chiricahuas.
It is a combination of Colorado’s forested mountains and the hoodoo rocks of Brice and Zion National Parks. It’s hard to believe the Chiricahuas are in the middle of what many people consider a desert.

We’ve been doing a lot of hiking the last few weeks. Last week we went to Ft. Bowie. Ft. Bowie was established back in 1862 to guard Apache Pass. It’s a mile and a half intermediate hike back to it.

We would recommend it for anyone who would like to get a vision of what military life was like in the 1800’s.
