Bob AlexanderspacerBob Alexander is one of the most renowned historians of the Old West. A native Texan and veteran lawman, Bob retired as a special agent with the US Treasury Department and began a second career as an author.

The National Outlaw/Lawman History Association honored Alexander in 2004 with its Literary Award for Outstanding Contributions to Western Historical Writing.

He also won the 2007 Outstanding Book on Outlaw/Lawman History award. The honor, presented at the annual convention of the Western Outlaw/Lawman History Association (WOLA) in Cheyenne, Wyo., was for Alexander's book "Desert Desperadoes".

Chronicle of the Old West is proud to offer the following Bob Alexander books for sale:

Dangerous Dan Tucker

Dangerous Dan Tucker

Deputy Sheriff, Town Marshall, Deputy U.S. Marshall, Train Agent and Livestock Inspector…Dan Tucker was the quintessential lawman during the violent frontier period of southwest New Mexico.

This book is more than a gunman’s story. Bob Alexander skillfully weaves in Tucker’s nervy confrontations with criminals, the quirky and everyday details of an underpaid lawman living on the edge.

The story of a little known southwest New Mexico deputy sheriff; no Hollywood hero, but extremely competent and supremely dangerous if you had been an outlaw!

Desert Desperadoes

Desert Desperadoes by Bob Alexander

Bob Alexander's book on the history of outlawry in America is a gem for all Old West readers. Notable characters like Billy the Kid, Geronimo, Victorio, The Earps and many others are well represented.

Besides such well-known "desperadoes", the book colorfully recounts the careers of characters such as "Bronco Bill" Walters, "Curly Bill" Brocius, Kit Joy, "Three-Fingered Jack" Dunlap, Pony Diehl, "Black Jack" Christian, "Six-Shooter Smith" and John Kinney, "King of the Rustlers."

Among those seeking to bring the book's "banditti" to justice are Pat Garrett, the slayer of Billy the Kid; "Dangerous Dan" Tucker, the man too tough for Wyatt Earp; and Harvey Whitehill, the first man to arrest Billy the Kid.

This book also contains 117 rare historical photographs, many of them never before published.

Fearless Dave Allison

Fearless Dave Allison

Dave Allison became the youngest sheriff in the State of Texas in 1888 and was still wearing a badge when he was gunned down in 1923.

Between those times, he was six times an elected sheriff; a member of the Texas Rangers and Arizona Rangers; Chief of Police at Roswell, New Mexico; personal bodyguard of Colonel William Cornell Green; and Livestock Inspector. Devoid of bravado, yet fearless and deadly when provoked.

Allison was described by George S. Patton as, “The most noted gunman here in Texas.”

Sheriff Harvey Whitehill

Sheriff Harvey Whitehill

Bob Alexander shows that not only was Harvey Whitehill a major figure in the annals of the of the Old West, he shows as well that the Sheriff’s home ground of Silver City, New Mexico, rivals Tombstone, Dodge City and Deadwood as a hotbed of outlaw-lawman history.

A great biography of this 19th century Grant County, NM, sheriff. Whitehill jailed Billy the Kid, knew the infamous rustler John Kinney, lived through the Apache Wars and beat Pat Garrett at the polls.

Six-Guns and Single-Jacks

Six-Guns and Single-Jacks by Bob Alexander

Bob Alexander explores the Old West heritage in the often forgotten area of Silver City, New Mexico. Readers will travel back in time as Bob colorfully recounts tales of the violence and lawlessness that made Silver City and Old Grant's County, New Mexico one of the most dangerous places in the Southwest.

Few histories of the Old West are as well-researched or told with such authentic flavor as this book. Chuck Parsons, a renowned Outlaw/Lawman authority writes Six-Guns and Single-Jacks is a "superbly researched biography and reading its history is like holding up a mirror to the entire Western adventure."

Reading [this history of southwestern New Mexico] is like holding up a mirror to the entire Western adventure. --Chuck Parsons, editor of the National Outlaw/Lawman Association Quarterly
