From Our Outfit...
January 2012 Notes If you happen to be a subscriber to our monthly publication, Chronicle of the Old West, you will have discovered that I goofed up. Pages #10 and #11 in the December 2011 issue of Chronicle of the Old West were repeats of those pages from the August 2011 issue. How did that happen? We put each issue together in three sections. It’s the way the printer requires it. Section #1 is pages #1 thru #9; section #2 comprises of pages #10 and #11; and pages #12 to #20 make up section #3. Each of these sections is sent via email in a PDF format to the printer. And I accidentally attached the wrong section #2 to the email when I sent the December 2011 issue. The tough thing is there’s no way I can blame it on anyone else. The good thing is, because of this, there’s no way I’m tempted to blame it on anyone else. Unfortunately, we’re living in a time when we’re reluctant to accept responsibility for anything that isn’t to our benefit. When we were infants, adults were responsible for feeding us, changing our diapers and putting us to bed. We had little or no control over our lives. As we got older, we got more control. Then, as a teenager, most of us fought for total control. In reality, as a teenager, we wanted control, but not responsibility. As adults, a large percentage of us still want the control, but not the responsibility. A while back I saw a billboard comprised of five crying babies. Each of the babies was pointing his finger at one of the other babies. The caption said, “That’s right America…It’s always someone else’s fault!” One of the biggest excuses we give for not taking responsibility for our lives is life isn’t fair. O.K., I’m going to let you in on one of the greatest secrets of life…life isn’t fair. We’re not playing on a level field. I don’t care how may laws Congress passes. We live in a round planet…my apologies to the “flat earth people”. Every field on this planet is a part of a circle, and therefore an arc that just isn’t on the level. According to Dr. Wayne Dyer, “If the world were so organized that everything had to be fair, no living creature would survive. The birds would be forbidden to eat worms, and everyone’s self-interest would have to be served.” Always remember, to the degree we believe things happen to us, we are powerless. To the degree we believe we have something to do with what happens to us, we have control over our lives. It’s our reaction to what happens around us, not what happens around us that motivates us to work hard or give up in despair. We’ve become a great country, in part, because we’ve traditionally accepted responsibility for our lives…both the good and the bad. We’ve built on the good and eliminated the bad. Back in the Old West the easiest way to be ostracized by your fellow cowboys was to be a complainer. Let’s not weaken our great country, and ourselves, by being a complainer and passing responsibility for our lives to someone else.
